If you are a person who has lower back pain that you would describe as a “pain in the butt”, pain that radiates down your leg or through your groin, pain when you bend forward and come back up, or if you have been diagnosed with arthritis in your sacral spine, this workshop is for you!

Students of any skill level with lower back and sacral band pain due to sacroiliac joint issues will benefit from this in-person and livestream workshop. Yoga teachers and therapists will also find it useful, in both studio and clinical practice. You will learn:

  • Anatomy of the hips, core, and sacroiliac joints as it relates to sacral spine health.
  • Gentle, safe movements to open, balance, and strengthen your sacroiliac joints while respecting your body’s particular conditions and limitations.
  • Techniques and prop usage to create sacral band health that you can practice at home, and that can be used by teachers and therapists to support clients with sacral issues.

Liz Owen’s expertise of lower back health and yoga philosophy brings both Eastern and Western wisdom to bear on creating a healthy lower back and will bring mindfulness and depth to your journey of maintaining lower back health in daily life.

Join us and experience how you can use yoga for emotional support. You will learn about the dynamics and practice of yoga as it relates to depression and anxiety, and you will take away an understanding of how to practice asana and breathwork that is helpful for creating emotional well-being. Both discussion and practice parts are based on NIH-funded research co-authored by Owen and conducted at Boston University School of Medicine.

In our group discussion, we will talk briefly about both eastern and western aspects of depression and anxiety, and how their interface can create mental and emotional well-being, including:

  • Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • The role of the vagus nerve and how yoga practices stimulate it for optimum functioning.
  • How yoga practice balances the nervous system – breath practices, postures, involvement of energy centers called chakras, and the liver, kidney, heart and lung meridians.
  • Which breaths and postures to practice for depression and anxiety.

The practice portion of the workshop includes active and restorative asanas, pranayama, and therapeutic deep relaxation. It is accessible for all levels, especially beginners.

This workshop is suitable for all practitioners, yoga teachers-in-training, yoga teachers, and other professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge of easing depression and anxiety. Approved for Yoga Alliance CEUs.
