This alignment-based practice will renew, refresh, and restart your body and mind at the end of your busy week. Class includes centering your mind and warming up your body, a mix of vinyasa and sustained postures, pranayama, and deep relaxation. In our time together you will learn gentle, safe movements to stretch tight hip and lower back muscles and strengthen weak ones, techniques for coping with pain flare-ups, and ways to create natural tone and balance while respecting your body’s particular conditions and limitations. Special attention is paid to pelvic misalignment issues, sacral joint dysfunction, and spinal disk conditions. Liz Owen’s expertise of lower back health and yoga philosophy brings both Eastern and Western wisdom to bear on creating a healthy lower back and will bring mindfulness and depth to your journey of maintaining lower back health in daily life.

In this teacher training immersion we delve into the physical and energetic structure and alignments of the back and the spine. You will learn:

  • Spinal and back anatomy – sacral, lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spines.
  • Anatomy of the hips, and musculature of the abdomen and legs, and how they support back health.
  • Proper alignment and movement of the spine in asana and meditation practice.
  • Common back conditions and injuries. Special attention is paid to pelvic misalignment issues, sacral joint dysfunction, and spinal disk conditions.
  • Sequencing asana practice for back health.
  • Gentle, safe movements to stretch tight hip and lower back muscles and strengthen weak ones.
  • Use of assists, props, and pose modifications for optimal alignment and back health.
  • How to help your students ease back pain.
  • The spine and the energetic body – asana, pranayama, and yoga nidra practice to open chakras and nadis, and enable the flow of prana.
