“Daniel Orlansky and Liz Owen were the most compassionate, detail-oriented teachers I could have possibly asked for. Their immense expertise and the focused curriculum have left me feeling confident in my skills as a yoga instructor, not only of the physical postures, but of the pranayama, physical and energetic awareness, and the divine oneness and non-judgement at the core of the yoga practice. Though I was previously terrified of public speaking, I feel well prepared now to share this practice with the world, and so very well cared for.” – Lauren A, Medford MA, 2016 Graduate

“Daniel and Liz were incredible teachers and I feel so lucky to have taken their training. I learned so much from both Daniel and Liz, who bring such diverse and broad information and experience of the yoga field to their training. They are the best!” – Ali W, 2014 Graduate

Yoga for Depression and Anxiety Teacher Training Immersion
with Liz Owen, E-RYT500, C-IAYT

In this workshop you will learn about yoga as an evidence-based practice that can be used on its own or alongside traditional western medical treatments to help ease depression and anxiety. You will take away an understanding of how to use yoga in your everyday life to create mental and emotional well-being. Both discussion and practice portions are based on NIH-funded research co-authored by Owen and conducted at Boston University School of Medicine, published by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Practice includes a centering meditation, pranayama, active and restorative asanas, therapeutic deep relaxation, and coherent breathing (breathing at a rate of five breaths per minute). Discussion includes:

  • Sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems.
  • Allostatic loads and how they contribute to depression and anxiety.
  • The effect of yoga on heart rate variability, which is a marker of parasympathetic tone.
  • The role of the vagus nerves and which yoga practices stimulate them for optimum functioning.
  • The philosophical aspects of yoga as tools for healing anxiety and depression.
  • How yoga practice balances the nervous system – pranayama, asana, involvement of the chakras, and the liver, kidney, heart and lung meridians.
  • Which breaths and asanas to practice for anxiety and which to practice for depression.
  • Meeting the mind and body where they are.
  • Designing a practice for depression, designing a practice for anxiety.

This workshop is suitable for yoga teachers, teachers in training, and other professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge of easing depression and anxiety. An electronic booklet about how to practice yoga to help manage moods is included. 3 Yoga Alliance CE credits are available for RYTs.
