“Daniel Orlansky and Liz Owen were the most compassionate, detail-oriented teachers I could have possibly asked for. Their immense expertise and the focused curriculum have left me feeling confident in my skills as a yoga instructor, not only of the physical postures, but of the pranayama, physical and energetic awareness, and the divine oneness and non-judgement at the core of the yoga practice. Though I was previously terrified of public speaking, I feel well prepared now to share this practice with the world, and so very well cared for.” – Lauren A, Medford MA, 2016 Graduate

“Daniel and Liz were incredible teachers and I feel so lucky to have taken their training. I learned so much from both Daniel and Liz, who bring such diverse and broad information and experience of the yoga field to their training. They are the best!” – Ali W, 2014 Graduate

In this workshop you will learn about the dynamics and practice of yoga as it relates to depression and anxiety, and you will take away an understanding of how to practice and teach asana and breathwork practices that are helpful for working with varying symptoms of depression and anxiety. Both discussion and practice portions are based on NIH-funded research co-authored by Owen and conducted at Boston University School of Medicine.

The practice portion of the workshop includes active and restorative asanas, pranayama, and therapeutic deep relaxation. In our group discussion, we delve into both eastern and western aspects of depression and anxiety, and how their interface can create mental and emotional well-being. Included is discussion of:

  • Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • Allostatic loads and how they contribute to depression and anxiety.
  • The effect of yoga on heart rate variability, which is a marker of parasympathetic tone.
  • The role of the vagus nerves and which yoga practices stimulate them for optimum functioning.
  • The philosophical aspects of yoga as tools for healing anxiety and depression.
  • How yoga practice balances the nervous system – pranayama, asana, involvement of the chakras, and the liver, kidney, heart and lung meridians.
  • Which breaths and asanas to practice for anxiety and which to practice for depression.
  • Meeting the mind and body where they are.

This workshop is suitable for yoga teachers and other professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge of easing depression and anxiety. An electronic booklet including how to practice yoga to help manage moods is included. Three Yoga Alliance CE credits are available for registered yoga teachers.
